ENS & RSMS Direct Entry Stream

Hello, everyone. We are Your Trustable Migration Partner, Opartners.

Today, we would like to give you a brief explanation about Direct Entry Stream for an ENS or RSMS visa.

Most people are aware of the ENS (Employer Nomination Scheme, Subclass 186) or RSMS (Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme, Subclass 187) visas. These visas let overseas skilled workers, who are nominated by their employer, live and work in Australia permanently. Unlike the TSS visa, which is a temporary visa, the ENS or RSMS visas are permanent resident visas.

There are three separate streams for the ENS or RSMS visa, and visa applicants must meet the specific visa requirements depending on the stream they intend to apply through.

The three streams divided as:

  • Direct Entry Stream
  • Temporary Residence Transition (TRT) Stream
  • Labour Agreement Stream

The second, Temporary Residence Transition (TRT) Stream allows an ENS or RSMS visa application to be made after working in Australia with the same employer for 3 years (or 2 years) on the 457 or TSS visa. Before the TSS visa was introduced, most applicants chose this stream to get Australian permanent residency. One of the most well-known benefits of this TRT stream was lower English requirements (Previously IELTS 5.0 each band score) compared to that of the Direct Entry stream.

However, it is also possible to get the ENS or RSMS visa through the Direct Entry Stream, which does not require that visa applicants work with their Australian employer for 3 years (or 2 years) as long as they meet the requirements for the stream. Before March 2018, for the reason above, many clients were not aware of Direct Entry stream, but now this stream, I consider, should get spotlight.

The third Labour Agreement Stream, visa applicants only can gain the ENS or RSMS visa through a specially developed labour agreement between the Australian government and a specific employer. This stream is rare, not commonly used one.

Under the current migration law, visa applicants will need to demonstrate at least Competent English (IELTS 6.0 each score or PTE 50 for each part) to qualify for either the Direct Entry stream or the TRT Stream.

Therefore, if visa applicants are able to meet the requirements for Direct Entry stream, this stream can be more attractive option because they do not need to work for three years with the same employer on the temporary work visa such as 457 or TSS.

The most important visa requirements for the Direct Entry Stream of an ENS or RSMS is ‘3 years of full-time work experience in a nominated occupation after completing study,’ ‘a positive skills assessment,’ and ‘English requirement.’ Of course, applicants must be nominated by an approved Australian sponsor, and the sponsoring company must meet the specified requirements.

For those who consider migration after studying in Australia, currently, 2 years of full-time work experience after study is required to get a TSS visa. This can be interpreted that they are eligible to apply for the ENS or RSMS visa through the Direct Entry Stream after working for just one year on the TSS visa after TSS visa grant, instead of working three years on the TSS visa.

As it gets harder to obtain Australian visas, especially, Permanent resident visas, it is highly recommended to plan ahead with professional advice. Please feel free to contact Opartners anytime, if you are interested or have more queries regarding ENS, RSMS or TSS visa.
